The gains
The eighty-eight
Episodes that happened only because the work was in the building — nearly twice the number of collisions, counted the same way, and landing on the same person.

Two rooms covering 26 square metres, built for two things. Between them they now carry seven uses. One of the two carry more than one, and kitchen and diner carries six. The median room is in use 8 of the 16 waking hours. Two rooms, one carrying most of the gains and one carrying almost nothing at all.
Eighty-eight against forty-seven
The log counts what the arrangement gave as carefully as what it cost, by the same method, in the same fortnight.
What counts as a gain
A loose test would have produced any number at all. The one used excludes most of what people mean by the benefits of working at home.
Thirty-one domestic tasks
The largest category of gain is also the one most likely to be mistaken for a cost, and the record shows both readings are available.
Rest taken when it was needed
Eleven episodes, the smallest category but one, and on both people's account the one that changed the most about how a working day feels.
The nineteen deliveries
A parcel taken is the smallest kind of gain and the easiest to count. Nineteen of them, all in the room that does nothing else.
What an office does not offer at all
Thirteen of the eighty-eight are things no workplace arrangement can provide, however good. They are the smallest categories and the hardest to replace.
Why the gains are not weighed
A weighted total would be more useful and less trustworthy. The record publishes the raw counts and the rule, and leaves the weighting where it belongs.
The gains are also a cost to somebody
Every episode in the gains column happened during working hours, in a building, to a person. Three of the six kinds have a second reading.
