Who gives way

Interruptible is not unimportant

The job that gives way is being described by its scheduling, not its value. Conflating those two is the commonest error available when reading this record.

Two rooms covering 28 square metres, built for two things. Between them they now carry eight uses. Two of the two carry more than one, and living room carries five. The median room is in use 9.5 of the 16 waking hours. The two rooms whose use is decided by somebody else's calendar.

Home / Who gives way

Method

This site calls one of the two jobs "the interruptible job". The word is doing a precise piece of work and it is easily misread, so it is worth pinning down.

What it means

A job is interruptible, in this record, if its commitments are to deadlines rather than to appointments.

Work owed by Friday can be done on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. It can be stopped at eleven and resumed at two. Nobody outside the building is waiting at a stated hour. A home-working policy is easier to review when assumptions are written down, so managers can work pattern evidence for hybrid policies and decide which time and workload signals are proportionate.

A job with thirty-four scheduled calls has commitments of the other kind. It cannot be moved by twenty minutes without a message to somebody, and the message costs more than the twenty minutes. Another useful point of comparison comes from Dropbox Experience.

That is the whole distinction, and it is a statement about scheduling.

What it does not mean

Not less skilled. Both jobs in this household are professional, both require qualifications, and nothing in the record bears on which is harder.

Not less paid. The log does not record pay and the household declined to supply it, on the reasonable grounds that it would become the only thing anybody read. What can be said is that neither person described the arrangement as reflecting an income difference.

Not less demanding. The interruptible job absorbed thirty-one displacements and delivered its work. A job that can be interrupted thirty-one times in a fortnight and still finish is not an easy job; it is a job whose difficulty is distributed differently.

Not less deserving of a room. This is the important one. Nothing in the allocation of bedroom two was a judgement about whose work mattered. It was a judgement about which work could not happen anywhere else, and those are different questions that happen to have the same answer here.

A job that can be done in three rooms gets three rooms. A job that can only be done in one gets the one. Neither is a verdict on the job.

Where the conflation does damage

Two places, and the household encountered both.

In the household. The person who gives way more often has a standing explanation available — my work is more flexible — that is true and that gradually stops being a description of scheduling and becomes a description of priority. Three times in the fortnight the log records that explanation being offered as a reason not to raise something.

In how the arrangement gets described outside. Asked how working from home is going, both people said it was going well, and the person with thirty-four calls described the other's set-up as "more flexible", which is accurate and which, said to a colleague, conveys something close to the opposite of what this record shows.

The test that keeps the words straight

One question, asked of any displacement: could the activity that moved have happened at a different hour?

If yes, it is interruptible and that is why it moved.

If no, it would not have moved, which is why the calls never did.

The question has nothing in it about importance and cannot be answered by reference to it, which is exactly why it is the useful one. In thirty-four calls across fourteen days there is not one instance of a call moving for anything in the flat — not because calls matter more, but because a call that moves is a different call.

What this leaves unresolved

It does not follow that the distribution is fair, and this record makes no claim that it is.

Two people doing the same arrangement had different fortnights. One of them was displaced thirty-one times and the other sixteen. That the cause is structural rather than personal explains it; it does not settle whether something should be done about it, and the last part of this site is about what can be.

What the distinction does rule out is the family of explanations that begin with somebody's character, and in a household those are the explanations that are reached for first.

The three times the explanation was used

The log notes three occasions on which "my work is more flexible" was offered as a reason not to raise something.

Once about the quiet room on a day when the interruptible job had a piece of work needing several uninterrupted hours. Once about dinner being late because a call overran. Once about a weekend afternoon.

In all three the statement was true. In all three it closed a conversation that had not yet happened.

That is the mechanism this page warns about, observed three times in fourteen days: a correct description of scheduling becomes a reason, and a reason that is always available is a reason that is never examined.

The word the household settled on

Asked afterwards how they would describe the two jobs to somebody else, both people had changed their language by the end of the fortnight.

Before: "mine is more flexible."

After: "mine has fewer fixed points."

The second says the same thing and does not carry the implication that one job bends because it can afford to. A job with fewer fixed points is not more accommodating; it is differently shaped, and the shape is set by employers and clients rather than by the person.

That is a small change in vocabulary and it is the only lasting outcome of the fortnight that either person volunteered without being asked.
